Wendy Williams Talks To Variety About Upcoming Standup Debut!

Posted Jun 11, 2014

Wendy WilliamsWendy Williams parlayed her “shock jock” radio success into a daily talk show, which enters its sixth season this fall. She also has a successful wig line, has acted in “Chicago” on Broadway, and plans to make her standup debut in Vegas.

How would you describe “The Wendy Williams Show”?

It’s a silly show, but silly is good. We’re not splitting the atom. I wanted to do the kind of show that I would want to watch, as a busy wife, mother and midde-aged woman.

Your book “Hold Me in Contempt” is doing well.
It’s my seventh book and my third time on the New York Times bestseller list. It’s a romance novel with sex and drugs and murder, and more sex. Sex scenes are very important in romance novels. Kimberly Kind (the protagonist) is the smartest, dumbest woman I’ve ever known. She throws everything away for the love of this guy King, who should have just remained
a one-night stand.

You’re going to appear in Vegas?
I’m going to be 50 on July 18, and people asked, “What is it you’d like to do?” And I said, “I’d love to do standup.” I was thinking in some small New York club. And now it’s a 70-minute set in a room that holds 800 people! It’s kind of standup and a one-woman show combined. I want to tell stories that will make people laugh. It will help that they will be drunk.

What would surprise people about you?
That I am intensely, fiercely a homebody and intensely private. I treasure my privacy. I could stay in the house on my own under house arrest for five years. When I’m working I give it my all, but when I’m finished, I like to go home. I’m very nervous about becoming a “Hollywood insider” — the girl who’s lunching with other celebrity girls, who’s at every opening, including the opening of an envelope. I have been reporting on celebrity stuff my whole career and am very aware that fame is a slippery slope. I enjoy leading a well-rounded life. Believe me, I don’t take it for granted.
