Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema have unveiled the red band trailer for their House Party remake, marking the feature directorial debut of veteran music video helmer Calmatic, which Is slated for an exclusive release in theaters on January 13, 2023. (It had previously been believed that the film would bow on HBO Max.)

The original 1990 comedy House Party watched as high schooler Christopher (Christopher “Kid” Reid) snuck out to his friend Peter” (Christopher “Play” Martin) house party, for a wild night of music and fun. The film was a surprise box office hit for New Line, and is credited with helping launch hip-hop into the mainstream. It also launched the career of writer-director Reginald Hudlin, and those of actors Reid, Martin, Tisha Martin-Campbell, Martin Lawrence, A.J. Johnson, Daryl “Chill” Mitchell, and Full Force (Paul Anthony, Bowlegged Lou, and B-Fine).

In the remake, aspiring club promoters and best buds Damon (Tosin Cole) and Kevin (Jacob Latimore) are barely keeping things together. Out of money, down on their luck and about to lose the roofs over their heads — and freshly fired from their low-lift jobs as house cleaners — the pair needs a huge windfall to make their problems go away. In a ‘what the hell?’ move, they decide to host the party of the year at an exclusive mansion, the site of their last cleaning job, which just happens to belong to none other than LeBron James. No permission? No problem. What could go wrong? How about a time-traveling DJ, undependable security, a runaway guest list, one borrowed Lamborghini, angry rival promoters, a stolen championship ring, escalating property damage, an angry koala..? But also, one outrageous ride stacked with double-take cameos and timeless throwback tracks, R-rated comedy and two friends worth cheering for… you have to see to believe. After all, a night like this doesn’t come around more than once.

The script for the new House Party film was written by Jamal Olori & Stephen Glover (Atlanta). Karen Obilom, D.C. Young Fly, and Scott Mescudi also star in the pic produced by James and Maverick Carter of The SpringHill Company, which was exec produced by Reginald Hudlin, Warrington Hudlin, Spencer Beighley, and Jamal Henderson.

Today’s House Party trailer features “2 Step,” an all-new original song from Def Jam’s 2 Chainz.
