TV Land Renews George Lopez Comedy For Second Season!

Posted Jun 3, 2016

TV Land is keeping George Lopez around.

The Viacom-owned cable network announced Friday that it has renewed the comedian’s freshman comedy series Lopez for a second season.

The comedy stars Lopez as a version of himself: a guy who struggles with wanting to give back to the Latino community where he grew up, but also feels as though he can never satisfy all the demands placed on him by both the celebrity world and his hometown. The renewal comes ahead of the June 22 first-season finale.

The series launched March 30 to strong reviews — with THR chief TV critic Tim Goodman noting that Lopez finally found the right formula with TV Land’s single-camera series after his ABC comedy, George Lopez, and follow-up comedies on TBS and FX.

Through its first nine episodes, the series has averaged 461,000 total viewers — a respectable showing for TV Land.

Lopez continues TV Land’s string of hits following its younger-skewing brand reinvention. Starting with critical darling Younger, the cabler has enjoyed a series of renewals for its single-camera fare, including Teachers, Impastor, The Jim Gaffigan Show and more.

This week, TV Land greenlighted Melissa McCarthy/Ben Falcone-produced Groundlings comedy Nobodies, which marked the latest single-camera comedy for the cabler. On the pilot stage, TV Land still has its First Wives Club reboot and a Kyle Richards comedy still in contention and is developing a new take on Heathers.
