It didn’t take long for Universal to greenlight a sequel to 2014’s buddy-comedy hit Ride Along, which opened on that MLK holiday weekend to $41.5 million on its way to a $154M worldwide gross — mostly coming from the domestic side. Ride Along 2, slotted for that same weekend next year (January 15, 2016), brings back the full crew from the first incarnation: stars Ice Cube and Kevin Hart, writers Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi (based on characters created by Greg Coolidge), director Tim Story, and producers Cube, Will Packer, Matt Alvarez and Larry Brezner. The first trailer dropped today and finds the duo heading to Miami to track a drug ring mastermind (Benjamin Bratt).
Ken Jeong, Olivia Munn, Bruce McGill, Tika Sumpter and Sherri Shepherd co-star.
The trailer timing is good: Universal’s N.W.A. biopic Straight Outta Compton about Ice Cube’s iconic rap group drops tomorrow. Hart is coming off Get Hard with Will Ferrell and is shooting Central Intelligence with Dwayne Johnson and Aaron Paul.
