We discovered the news that one of South Africa’s top comedians, Trevor Noah, has just landed a half-hour pilot on FOX. The news got even better for this new comic as the pilot has teamed up with Jada Pinkett Smith and Will Smith’s Overbrook Entertainment to bring Noah’s sitcom to the network.
After his great appearance last year on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and his US comedy special, African American, currently on Showtime, Noah also teamed up with Legendary Television to bring Noah’s sitcom to the network. Sameer Gardezi, who has written on the Emmy-winning series Modern Family, will pen the script.
The pilot, which the comic would star in, is based on his stand-up act and life. Noah grew up in an urban area of Johannesburg, South Africa called Soweto. He’s the son of a Swiss father and South African mother and frequently muses on race and ethnicity from his unique point of view. No word yet on the type of show it could be, whether it will take place in South Africa or be a fish-out-of-water sitcom of a South African in America.
Stay tuned as this story is developing.
