Netflix has acquired Frontier, a Canadian action adventure drama series that has tapped Jason Momoa (Game of Thrones, Batman Vs. Superman: Dawn Of Justice) to star. The six-episode first season of the series — from creators Rob Blackie (Republic Of Doyle) and Peter Blackie (Majumder Manor) and director Brad Peyton (San Andreas) — will premiere exclusively on Netflix outside of Canada in 2016.
Rob Blackie, Peter Blackie, Peyton, Jeff Fierson (This Is Not A Robbery), Alex Patrick (Republic Of Doyle) and John Vatcher (Republic Of Doyle) serve as executive producers on the series, which is produced by Take The Shot Productions and Peyton and Fierson’s Factory Backwards, in association with Discovery and Netflix.
Commissioned by Discovery Canada as the channel’s first original scripted series, Frontier will debut in Canada on the network before coming to Netflix Canada beginning in 2018. The series follows the chaotic and violent struggle to control wealth and power in the North American fur trade in the late 18th century. Told from multiple perspectives, the series takes place in a world where business negotiations might be resolved with close-quarter hatchet fights, and where delicate relations between native tribes and Europeans can spark bloody conflicts. Co-starring alongside Mamoa are Alun Armstrong (New Tricks), Landon Liboiron (Hemlock Grove), Zoe Boyle (Downton Abbey), Allan Hawco (Republic Of Doyle), and Canadian newcomer Jessica Matten.
