We just discovered news that rapper and new actor Mos Def was recently let go from the HBO series he was officially hired to do a couple of months ago. If you recall we reported that he was hired for the starring role on a new series titled Enlightened, which is set for HBO, but it seems otherwise now. Now the word has leaked to us through our sources that the deal couldn’t be closed before filming began last week, and that during the final negotiations, HBO decided to go another way.
We hear that he was recently replaced by actor Timm Sharp, former star of Undeclared, a short live TV series.
Enlightened captures the life of a character named Amy, played by actress Laura Dern (of Jurassic Park fame). After living a rough life filled with regrets and bad decisions, Amy becomes spiritually awakened. From there, life doesn’t’ really get any better.
Sharp will take the role of Amy’s boss. The series is written and directed by School of Rock writer Mike White. Also in the show is Luke Wilson as Amy’s drug addicted ex-husband. Despite its dark set up, the series is actually fit with lots of comedy and drama.
No word on Mos Def’s next project but we hear he is in discussions for several new films and a possible new show for next fall.
