Maya Rudolph is joining New Line’s college comedy “Life of the Party,” where she will portray the neurotic best friend of Melissa McCarthy’s lead character.
New Line has given “Life of the Party” a prime summer release date of May 11, 2018. McCarthy and her husband Ben Falcone set up the comedy project several months ago at New Line with her starring and him directing.
As with “The Boss,” McCarthy and Falcone wrote the script and are producing through their On the Way production company along with Chris Henchy (“Daddy’s Home”). Details of the plot are being kept under wraps other than being in the vein of the Rodney Dangerfield’s “Back to School.”
“Animal Kingdom” star Molly Gordon will play the daughter of McCarthy’s character in “Life of the Party.” Filming is set to begin later this month in Atlanta.
She and McCarthy broke out in the 2011’s “Bridesmaids.” Rudolph was a cast member on “Saturday Night Live” for seven years and frequently makes guest appearances. She recently wrapped the first season of her own NBC variety show with Martin Short titled “Maya & Marty.”
Rudolph is repped by WME and 3 Arts Entertainment.
