Kevin Hart may have been overshadowed at the box office by Despicable Me 2, but the comedian’s stand-up film, Let Me Explain, had an impressive opening performance with a $17.4 million haul for the long weekend.
Let Me Explain, filmed at Madison Square Garden last year and distributed by Lionsgate, cost just $2.5 million to make and was only available in 836 theaters. However, Hart’s strong fanbase helped him even outperform Disney’s The Lone Ranger, with a per-theater average of $11,530 compared to The Lone Ranger‘s $7,539.
“The man’s obviously got a rabid fanbase,” said Lionsgate distribution exec David Spitz. “The great win for us was positioning the film against these summer monsters and coming away with an opening like this.”
Hart’s last concert film, Laugh at My Pain brought in $7.7 million last year. Let Me Explain could gross up to $35 million.
The actor-comedian will star in films Ride Along, co-starring Ice Cube and John Leguizamo, About Last Night and Think Like a Man Too next.
