Kerry Washington Nominated For An Emmy For 'Scandal'; 1st Black Actress Since 1995!

Posted Jul 18, 2013

If you have not been following the Emmys– and our friends in the Nielsen ratings tell us that you are not- this news item may interest you; after this mornings announcements Kerry Washington landed an Emmy nod for her role in ABC’s Scandal! She was nominated for  the Lead Actress In A Drama Series!

If you are not aware, she just made history as she was the first African American actress since Cicely Tyson to land a nomination in the Primetime Emmy category! At that time Tyson was nominated for her work in the NBC legal drama series Sweet Justice but she didn’t win.

Washington was joined by actor Don Cheadle (Lead Actor In A Comedy Series), this nomination marks his 6th total.

For Washington, this is her first ever Emmy nomination and it should be stated a black actress has never won in this category, in the 65 years since the first Primetime Emmys were awarded. BUT Washington has given herself a great chance as she is the talk of the Emmys with her performance in Scandal.

Other news from the Emmys;

Alfre Woodard picked up a nomination for her performance in Steel Magnolias, in the Best Supporting Actor in a Miniseries or Movie category.

Paris Barclay picked up a nomination in the Directing For A Comedy Series category, for directing Diva, the thirteenth episode of Glee’s fourth season.

The Primetime Emmys will be held Sunday, September 22, at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles. CBS is broadcasting this year’s show, with Neil Patrick Harris serving as host. His second major awards hosting gig this year (he also hosted the Tony Awards).
