Kanye West has little sense of humor when it comes to both his art and his high-profile relationship with Kim Kardashian. At this year’s MTV VMAs, comedian Jay Pharoah portrayed the 37-year-old rapper in a short stint, ranting much like the rapper, about himself, his music and Kardashian. While Kardashian, Kendall and Kylie Jenner were shown getting a good laugh, Kanye felt the need to confront Pharoah himself.
While performing at the Made in America Festival in Philadelphia on Aug. 30, Us Weekly reported that Kanye told the crowd he confronted the comedian about his comments during the spoof.
West said that after the awards show, he called Pharoah. “I said, ‘I appreciate your show, but let me tell you about my story. Let me tell you about what I went through to get to that position’ … So we ain’t gonna have no black comedians going onstage spoofing the people that’s working hard, and helping the next man out.”
The Saturday Night Live comedian is best known for impersonating celebrities including West, Jay Z, Denzel Washington, and Chris Rock. Watch a highlight of his famous SNL stint, “Waking up with Kimye” below.
