Ordinary People, a single-camera romantic comedy with music elements executive produced by John Legend and his wife, model/TV personality Chrissy Teigen, has been set up at ABC with a put pilot commitment. It will be written by Tracy Oliver (Survivor’s Remorse), who is expanding her writing collaboration with Black-ish creator Kenya Barris to the small screen. The duo, who have co-written together Barbershop 3 and an untitled Girls’ Trip movie at Universal, are reteaming for Ordinary People, with Oliver writing and Barris executive producing.
Said to be loosely inspired by Legend’s relationship with his wife Teigen, Ordinary
People explores an interracial couple with very different personalities and big ambitions. Not surprising given Legend’s background, music will play an element in the show. The project is a co-production between ABC Studios, where Barris is under an overall deal, and Legendary Television, where Legend’s Get Lifted Film Company has an overall pact.
Executive producing with Barris, Legend and Teigen are Legend’s Get Lifted partners Mike Jackson and Ty Stiklorius as well as Principato Young’s Brian Dobbins, Paul Young and Peter Principato.
Legend won an Oscar with Common this year for the song “Glory” from Selma. Teigen is
co-hosting the new syndicated talk show FABlife alongside Tyra Banks.
ABC just gave an off-cycle pilot order to another single-camera comedy co-produced by Legendary TV and ABC Studios, Downward Dog.
Oliver and Barris are with PYE. Oliver also is repped by ICM Partners and attorney Kim Stenton. Get Lifted is repped by WME and attorney Nina Shaw. Barris is repped by CAA.
