According to Guy Torry, it looks like there is about to be an anniversary show for Phat Tuesdays on September 1st!
If you are not familiar with Phat Tuesdays, it was the crowning achievement for black comedy in LA in the early 90’s as it highlighted many comedians who were hot of Def Comedy Jam AND many who were up-and-coming on the comedy scene. The show was every Tuesday at The Comedy Store, as it was founded and hosted by Torry, and on any given Tuesday you would see the hottest comedians in the game on stage and tons of celebrities in the audience. It was not unusual to see comedians such as Cedric The Entertainer, Tommy Davidson, Joe Torry, Mike Epps, or Damon Wayans on stage with celebrities such as Regina King, Shaquille O’Neal, or John Singleton in the audience-just to name a few. The show kicked off many of the comedy nights in LA now, as it has been duplicated many times over.
With that being said, recently Torry has mentioned that a documentary was on the horizon about the night because it jump started many careers as it was very common to see many agents in the audience as they would hand pick certain comedians for television shows. The documentary would feature that and many other things such as how it got started and why it ended.
Anyway, we have now discovered that Phat Tuesdays is back; we hear that the anniversary show will be held on September 1st at Club Nokia. The comedians set to grace the stage are Joe Torry, Lavell Crawford, Tony Rock, Tommy Davidson, and Luenell with some surprise guests. (See flier below)
We are sure that there will be more as this story is still developing. Stay tuned!
