The Humor Mill got a chance to sit down with comedian Robert Powell, the new host of ASPiRE’s new comedy sketch show titled Comic Edge. We asked Powell about his new show and his comedy ride that led him to be the new host of the show for ASPiRE.
If you haven’t been a fan of comedy or if you haven’t seen Powell at all, he started doing comedy in college as a dare and has been doing it ever since. Powell first hit the stage at the Shaq All Star Comedy Jam several years ago in February 2011 at the first Shaq Next All-Star Competition which led to his current spot on the Shaq All Star Comedy Jam Tour 2012/2013.
Slowly but surely he’s built up a comedy resume that has included hosting, opening, featuring, or touring with the likes of Kevin Hart, Lil Duval, Rickey Smiley, Mike Epps, DL Hughley, Rodney Perry, Cedric the Entertainer, Ron White and many, many, more.
Yet, it was Powell’s stand-out performance on ASPiRE’s clean comedy series, Laff Mobb’s We Got Next, that moved the network to partner with him to bring comedic stories of urban culture to life through Powell’s unique style of comedy.
While doing his comedy and building a name for himself, the comedians in the industry have been talking about him too and even Hollywood has been paying attention. With the heat he has been creating, Powell has even been able to perform at concerts such sharing the stage with Ludacris, Fantasia, Monica, Frankie Beverly and Maze, Faith Evans, Webbie, Boosie, Lil Wayne, Anthony Hamilton, Avant plus MANY more.
Comic Edge will provide non-stop laughter on real-life topics through sketch comedy, stand-up and improv. Powell and guest comedians find laugh-out-loud humor in everything from politics to dating and pop culture. Other comedians featured in the series include Sydney Castillo (Fifty Shades of Black), Trey Moe (American Dirtbags) and Donnivin Jordan (“Laff Mobb’s We Got Next”).
Comic Edge is executive produced by Powell, Daniel Paul (“Laff Mobb’s We Got Next”) and Arthur Spivak (“Mad About You,” “Laff Mobb’s We Got Next”). ASPiRE has ordered eight half-hour episodes of the series as its broadcast on Thursdays at 10 p.m. EDT.
Anyway, we sat down to discuss his new hosting gig on Comic Edge and what his journey has been like so far.
