DeWanda Wise (Shots Fired) is set to play the iconic role of Nola Darling in Spike Lee’s 10-episode Netflix series She’s Gotta Have It, a contemporary update of Lee’s groundbreaking 1986 indie film.
The series centers on Nola (Wise), a Brooklyn-based artist in her late 20s struggling to define herself and divide her time amongst her friends, her job and her three lovers: the cultured model Greer Childs; the protective investment banker Jamie Overstreet; and Da Original B-Boy Sneakerhead Mars Blackmon (Anthony Ramos), who still wears Jordans but now is a social-media phenomenon. Wise’s Nola Darling is a sexually liberated, free spirited painter/mixed media artist. In Lee’s movie, the role was played by Tracy Camilla Johns.
Lee is set to direct all episodes of the series, which he created and executive produces with his producer wife Tonya Lewis Lee. Netflix is the studio.
This marks the third consecutive high-profile TV gig for Wise. She co-stars on Fox’s upcoming event series Shots Fired and also has a major recurring role on the second season of WGN America’s drama series Underground. Wise is repped by Stone Manners Salners Agency, Bold Management and attorney Meyer & Downs.
