NBC is looking for a new diverse family comedy.
The network is teaming with Undateable duo Bill Lawrence and Adam Sztykiel for Vlad, a comedy starring Vladimir Caamano.
Vlad — which was picked up with a put-pilot commitment — is inspired by the stand-up comedian’s life and explores his family dynamics while living with his Dominican father and older brother in the Bronx.
Caamano, a finalist from NBC’s Stand Up for Diversity program, also has been featured on AXS’ Gotham Comedy Live. The touring comedian is a regular performer at New York’s The Stand Comedy Club. He won a diversity scholarship at The Peoples Improv Theater, where he participated in writing classes.
The comedian regularly incorporates his family into his stand-up routine. (Watch a clip, below.)
Vlad becomes the latest family comedy to be put in development this season. Broadcast networks have been looking for comedies that explore family dynamics that aren’t currently being portrayed on screen. ABC in particular has found success in that space with diverse series including Fresh Off the Boat, The Goldbergs, Dr. Ken and Black-ish. The Disney-owned network also is prepping a Latino family comedy starring Gabriel “Fluffy” Iglesias (Cristela).
For Lawrence, meanwhile, Vlad expands his relationship with NBC where third-year comedy Undateable is airing live twice a week on Fridays. Lawrence next has CBS’ Rush Hour reboot due midseason.
Caamano is repped by Innovative, CH Entertainment and Jackoway Tyerman; Lawrence is with ICM Partners and Morris Yorn; Sztykiel (Due Date) is with UTA, Kaplan/Perrone and McKuin Frankel.
