New York City’s comedians are banding together to help out a stand-up comic who was hit by a train in a SoHo subway station last week.
Nationally known comedians, including Aziz Ansari, Janeane Garofalo and Wyatt Cenac, have lent their talents to help raise money to cover medical costs for Liza Dye. According to police, the comic was hit by a southbound B train after she fell off the platform in the Broadway-Lafayette Street station Thursday.
Though she didn’t sustain any life-threatening injuries, Dye’s leg was seriously hurt and she doesn’t have medical insurance to help cover the costs of what doctors think will be an extended hospital stay, according to a YouCaring.com fundraising page set up by her friends.
Dye is in good spirits, according to the page. Hours after she was hit, she tweeted a photo of herself giving a thumbs-up in a neck brace with the message “im alive.”
More than 500 contributions have been made, and donations topped $31,000 as of Wednesday morning, according to the site.
Garofalo, Cenac and other comedians will do routines at a fundraiser show at The Stand comedy club in Gramercy Park next month.
Sunday, the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre also used a regularly scheduled show to raise money. According to a tweet from the show’s host, Ansari made a surprise appearance in support of Dye.
Ansari, who stars on NBC’s “Parks and Recreation,” later tweeted a link to Dye’s fundraising page asking his followers to donate. He will also headline another fundraiser show for the comedian Monday in Los Angeles.
