ABC Orders ‘Black-ish’ To Expand To 24-episode Seasons!

Posted Dec 13, 2016
ABC’s comedy lineup is getting ready to go the extra mile.

Black-ish, The Goldbergs, SpeechlessFresh Off The Boat, The Middle and American Housewife have received orders for additional episodes, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

Black-ish and The Goldbergs have been picked up for two more episodes, bringing their season totals to 24 episodes each. The latter four each have received orders for one more episode each, bringing their respective season totals to 23 episodes.

The pickups follow a strong start for ABC’s half-hour slate, which expanded this fall to a two-hour block on Tuesdays in addition to Wednesday’s two-hour block. For Black-ish, the pickup comes after the third-year comedy earned its first Golden Globe nominations, for best comedy series as well as best actor and actress in a comedy series for Anthony Anderson and Tracee Ellis Ross.

The strong performance of ABC’s comedies comes as the network has struggled with several first-year dramas, most notably Notorious, which saw its episode count trimmed, and Conviction, which will not receive an additional order. ABC also is getting ready to move sophomore FBI drama Quantico, which has dipped in the ratings recently, to Mondays in the new year.

While Black-ish and first-year series American Housewife are both produced in-house, the majority hail from outside studios. The Goldbergs is produced by Sony Television; Speechless and Fresh Off the Boat come from 20th TV; and The Middle, the longest-running of ABC’s comedies, is produced by Warner Bros.
